Attarbiya Masjid
Attarbiya Masjid is at 2 Revesby Walk, Nechells, Birmingham B7 4LG. It is a place of worship and a community centre, with the five daily prayers in congregation, Jumu'ah on Fridays, Madrasah Al Furqan for children, and lessons and conferences for adults.
The charity behind it goes back to 2006, when it was set up as the Somali Education and Cultural Centre to serve the community in Bordesley Green. It was registered with the Charity Commission in 2011, and today it is registered as Kowneyn Education and Cultural Centre, number 1142204.
The building was once the Vauxhall Sports and Social Club. The charity took it on in 2019, moved here from Garrison Lane in Bordesley, and turned a social club into the masjid you see today. Read more, and help us fill the gaps, on Our Story.
What happens here
- صلاةWorship All five daily prayers in congregation, and Jumu'ah every Friday, with a prayer area and entrance for sisters, so the whole community can pray together.
- علمLearning Madrasah Al Furqan teaches children six days a week, and the masjid hosts lessons, day classes and conferences for adults.
- جماعةCommunity Beyond the prayer hall, the masjid is a gathering point for families, young people and neighbours throughout the year.
Why Attarbiya?
Tarbiya (تربية) is the Arabic word for upbringing: raising a person with care, so they grow in faith, knowledge and character. It is a fitting name for a masjid that teaches children in its own madrasah and hosts lessons for adults.
Attarbiya Masjid is the name the community knows. On the charity register, and at the donation checkout, you will see Kowneyn Education and Cultural Centre. Both are the same charity.
Trustees
The trustees are volunteers and are responsible for the charity. None of them is paid by it. The names are as recorded on the Charity Commission register.
